Welcome back to the BSS Wiki staff interviews! What staff member are we looking to the insights of this time? It's @DvH2! Surprised? Well, you were supposed to be until someone predicted so somehow, but I digress! Without further ado, enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trigger: How have you discovered Bee Swarm Simulator? What got you into it?
DvH2: Starting things of mellow, alright
T: Mhm!
D: Well, I was roped into it by one of my old irl school friends when it first came out.
I didn't pay too much mind to it, but that opening week when it really blew up piqued my interest.
What kept me going was the intrigue. For some reason, I thought that the game was sectioned out, more like the normal simulator. Cookie-cutter worlds and all. That friend I mentioned before already unlocked the red cannon when I was playing, so when he used the it, it felt like he disappeared into the horizon. I somehow got it into my head that the red cannon, like, teleported you to the next mountain??? Like pet simulator x???
By the time I was at that level I was hooked
T: Any chance I can pique or interest of a game of chess after this--I mean, that's great! And how did you find the BSS Wiki?
D: I already knew fandom a bit before going to the wiki. My older brother was into this Plants vs Zombies Community Creations wiki, and I also had an account to complain on the DragonVale fandom.
I'm gonna be frank I don't exactly remember what started it all on the BSS wiki though 💀 I probably just wanted to google stuff.
T: Oh! So the DragonVale Hero 2 name has been around for a while before BSS, yeah?
D: damn this is going on records and everyone knows what it stands for now 😭
it has it's own lore, yea
Obviously it started with DragonVale. All you need to know is that it's better than Dragon City and Dragon Story fight me. My brother and I were really into it.
I guess followed my brother's example for a lot of things. When we made Clash of Clans accounts, his name was "Dragonvale Hero", and you can guess what mine was.
That would've been the end of the story, but really I only started shortening the name because of Clash Royale. Their character limit was shorter than CoC for some reason, so I had to go by DragonvaleH2. At some point or another it just became DvH2.
Worked surprisingly well because, later on, I started playing Plants vs Zombies Heroes, and the acronym PvZH was strikingly close to DvH2
T: It's quite a catchy name. From now on, I'll think of your name whenever I'm doing chemistry work involving hydrogen.
D: LOL
It's interesting how it's gained that double entendre
T: Now if only we can get an element with the symbol of "Dv" it would be perfect.
T: Next questions: What made you stay and want to join the wiki community?
Did you expect to stay as long as you did?
D: Honestly? Probably not. What kept me on the wiki was probably the fact I was super bored in school. Looked on the wiki every other chance I had because it was one of the few sites not blocked.
I also feel like BSS as a whole I wouldn't have gotten by without friends to support me.
T: I agree! Probably because the Fandom site is under the gray area; a mix between entertainment and education, I dunno.
D: Yeah
T: Now do you remember what it was like the day you got promoted? Did you expect the promotion?
D: ooh they all mix together. For the first question, I remember accepting the promotion request on discord while I was attending some after-school academy award night (I don't think I won anything). My heart was racing the for rest of the ceremony.
For the second question, I don't want to say I expected it, but I was definitely hoping it would happen. The wiki was a lot more loose back then, and the staff team was still being built up so it was anyone's game. The thing is, most of the people already on the team were very sociable and capable... socially. I always doubted whether I was really a contributing member of the both the wiki content and the community as a whole, but they gave me a chance.
T: What were you first few days after promotion like? Did it contribute to your activity while, well, active?
D: oooooh you hit a deep cut. man I was so paranoid whether I was doing too much or too little with the content moderation, and also afraid I would get burnt out immediately after promotion like I saw other people had.
T: It was like that for me too! I was warned about moderation burn out and was afraid when that'll happen to me.
D: You hit it off pretty well honestly
Mostly bc we were all DEAD 💀
T: Yeeaaahh, well it did give me a lot to do. It wasn't too bad, but like at the start of my promotions, some people I gave reminders/warnings to were kinda mean. :(
Just wondering, was it like that for you too or just me?
D: To this day I sugarcoat every reminder and warning I give
T: I try to keep my reminders relatively neutral and light. But once someone repeats an infraction, that's when I try to be more stern and a bit threatening? Like at the third warning or something, I just say "you will get a block if you keep doing this" or somewhere along those lines.
Sampling a bit from Grumdrop's [Gumdrop's] messages.
D: I'm gonna be real, I'm a yes-man so it makes it hard to be at a place of authority.
I got no spine and whoever took it took my funny bone too. You had to deal with discussions reports which were definitely more on the personal side. I feel for you
T: So what bones are you left with?
D: uhh I still have all my teeth. No cavities!
T: Funny teeth then! Have you gotten you wisdom teeth out? I bet not since you're quite smart yourself!
D: teeheehee you flatter me ~
no because I'm scared and the orthodontists said they were surprisingly mild so I could put it off. I havent died yet
T: Aw not again! [Referring to how we went off-topic. Whoops!]
Were there possibly any struggles or challenges during this time too? (Around start of your promotion to now.)
D: Definitely integrating myself into the backend of things. Reports, adding my voice in the wiki discussions the staff had, requests for things only content mods could do (or things I couldn't do but people thought I could). Also I had fat fingers and can recall at least 2 times I deleted a page ON ACCIDENT
T: I get paranoid on restoring deleted pages by accident. When strolling through the deletion log, I get a bit curious on what the deleted page had, but not wanting to restore the page. Didn't help that "view" and "restore" are both in the same button.
D: Yeah at some point I just get used to it
kinda like whenever I post smth to staff-chat that no one responds to but I know someones gotta do it I would NEVER have been able to do that when I first came on
that reminds me I have to deal with those disambiguation headers at some point
T: What do you like most about the wiki community? [This] can apply to the Discord server or Discussions.
D: I'm not sure... if I have to be super honest I kind of only have interest in the game because 1. sunk cost fallacy and 2. I like the artistic side of the community. All the stories and ideas stemming off of the already neat concepts Onett made.
T: Yes, I like how creative the community can get, to game ideas to fanart! It's nice to see them all.
Yours especially ❤️
D: Discord is my home. The wiki is not my home no more. It's changed so much, especially Discussions. I feel weird whenever I go around, like all eyes are on me, partly because of my role.
T: Maybe also because you are not as active on the Discussions as before? I think your reasoning is correct too.
D: Exactly that. In fact, I created an alt to see if I could reintegrate myself into the wiki without my staff rank to give me privilege. While I guess it worked, it also blew up in my face
T: Shhh don't reveal your undercover identity!
D: Obviously living a double life is an unbelievably stupid idea 💀 it kinda stinked not being able to open up (because anything past the alt account was DvH2 related)
yea any of you out there (wiki users) if you know who it was DONT LEAK IT it's funnier that way
also it will be very very awkward the things I did on it
[We then talked about some unrelated art stuff...almost forgetting we're still doing the interview.]
T: Do you see yourself continuing to be apart of the wiki and its community in the future?
D: maybe? well yes I guess, more out of obligation (and lack of anyone booting me out of the mod role) than anything. I'm a content mod first and foremost, so I slowly start to become more and more obsolete as the game stops having new things. The game has slowed down, and so has my progress in the game, and that makes it harder for me to get new info for the wiki on my own. 2 Beesmases ago, I could have called myself 'endgame', but now I don't know
As for the community, I don't want to say I outgrew it — I am still very immature and have found 0 new hobbies —
I just... changed
T: I appreciate the honest reply.
The good old days when it was just Petal Wand and Coco gear that is endgame. [I guess they still are somewhat?] Heck, let's go back when the Porcelain gear was considered endgame since they were the highest tool tiers [at the time].
Alas not anymore.
D: :(
T: Any final thoughts you want to share?
D: Check out my profile it has a sandbox you can leave a message on and something like that
Thanks once again DvH2 for answering these questions! If you read through the whole thing, you may have noticed the extra stuff thrown in there that weren't meant to be part of the interview. Heck, I even have to cut out some parts of our conversation since we went off of so many tangents. Cool guy and cool mod, so check out his stuff!
If you enjoy this series, feel free to ask for which staff member you would like to be interviewed with next. In addition, you may ask for pings. I would love to continue this series if you guys still like it.
